Giving culture space – a curatorial self-image

The Kultur Büro Elisabeth sees itself as a platform for artistic projects that seek dialogue in terms of both content and form: between past and present, between space and idea, between church, art, and the public.

The focus is on selecting and supporting projects—with an emphasis on artistic quality, openness to cross-genre work, and the desire to create new connections through art. The projects are mainly developed in partnership with external organizers and collectives, with Kultur Büro Elisabeth taking on an advisory, organizational, or supporting role.

The diverse program currently focuses on contemporary dance and music theater productions as well as concert projects featuring early music and new music. However, there is no commitment to individual art forms, a specific genre, or repertoire.

Through its combination of curated cultural programs and venue rentals, Kultur Büro Elisabeth has been a key promoter of dialogue between culture, the church, and society since its founding in 2003, while also ensuring the preservation and further development of the historic building.

Program Selection Guidelines

Spaces as Spaces of Possibility

The architectural uniqueness of the locations is an integral part of the artistic exploration. The spaces invite visitors to try out new formats, shift contexts, and experience art that works with the space, not against it.

New Connections

Working across disciplines and facilitating encounters—even beyond traditional genre boundaries—is a central concern. This creates spaces for exchange: between art forms, generations, opinions, and attitudes.

Enabling Discourse

With their symbolic significance, cultural churches also enable discussion of socially relevant, spiritual, or controversial topics. Art is not only displayed here—it becomes a starting point for conversation and reflection.

Promoting Young Talent

Young artists and ensembles receive targeted support—both organizational and advisory—with regard to possible funding opportunities. Opening up spaces for their first productions is just as much a part of the center's mission as providing professional conditions for new voices in Berlin's cultural scene.
