During his lifetime, Johann Philipp Krieger (1649-1725) was one of Germany's most important composers, and his cantatas were known from southern Germany to Stockholm. Both ensembles are taking the 300th anniversary of Krieger's death as an opportunity to present the wide range of his work to Berlin audiences. Johann Mattheson described the Nuremberg composer in his encyclopedia as "greater than a thousand others." At the court of Halle-Weißenfels, where Krieger was Kapellmeister for many years, Georg Friedrich Händel and Johann Sebastian Bach got to know him and held him in high esteem.
The program showcases the composer's wide range of skills: from large-scale masterpieces to expressive, intimate settings of the Song of Songs. Krieger reveals himself here as an original composer who is equal to or even superior to his better-known contemporaries, such as Dietrich Buxtehude and Johann Pachelbel.
