Voices Festival: "Cremulator" by Maxim Didenko

This first stage adaptation of the novel by Belarusian-born writer Sasha Filipenko tells the story of Peter Nesterenko, an officer in the anti-Bolshevik White Guard who, after a long period of exile at the beginning of the 20th century, struck a deal with the Soviet authorities and returned to his homeland.

It is a story about forgiveness and the search for one's own truth, about its enduring flame and its extinction across generations, about emigration and the wars of the last century, about a great love that loses its meaning when its recipient is a tyrant. Filipenko's book is based on historical evidence and interrogation transcripts recorded after Nesterenko's arrest by the NKVD prior to his execution in 1942. The text was adapted for the theater by German playwright Johannes Kirsten and staged by renowned director Maxim Didenko, who left Russia in 2022.

The VOICES Performing Arts Festival is an independent platform that represents the voices of displaced artists who must find new ways to be heard. It explores how an artist's identity can transcend geographical boundaries and whether displaced artists can redefine themselves and enrich a new cultural context. This year's program focuses on the recent waves of migration from the countries of the former USSR and introduces audiences to new names and scenes that deserve closer attention. VOICES 2024 will take place from November 2 to 29 at various locations in Berlin and will present new music, dance, and theater productions that reflect the challenges of cultural and political change and the impact of modern technologies.
