Golgathakirche

Built in 1900 by Max Spitta and Karl Wilde, the Golgatha Church is richly decorated with ornate interior fittings. Today, the imperial church is part of a historic building complex that also includes the Theological Seminary (in the GDR, the Language Seminary) and the Protestant Student Community. Together, they operate under the umbrella brand “Himmlische Höfe” (Heavenly Courtyards). Since January 2025, the Golgotha Church has been undergoing renovation with a multifunctional concept: in addition to church services, the church will also be used as an event venue for celebrations in the gallery, festive concerts, Taizé chants, and cosplay events.

Today, young people and students find a space for exchange and spiritual exploration here, whether in the “Himmlisches Café” (Heavenly Café) or in the special church services offered

History of Golgathakirche

Today, the imperial church is part of a historic ensemble of buildings that also includes the Theological Seminary (known as the Language Seminary in the GDR) and the Protestant Student Community. Together, they operate under the umbrella brand “Himmlische Höfe” (Heavenly Courtyards). The Theological Seminary and the church were important places of encounter and education in the GDR. In 1989, the founding appeal of the Social Democratic Party in the GDR (SDP) was presented: lecturers and students participated in the “Demokratie Jetzt” (Democracy Now) civil rights movement.
