The Cast Whale Project by Gil Shachar:
After years of negotiations with the South African Department of Environmental Protection and technical preparations, Gil Shachar and his on-call local team were able to cast a stranded dead humpback whale on the coast in the summer of 2018. The sculpture was completed in Cape Town in spring 2019.
The life-size sculpture (length 14 m) made its first major appearance in the summer of 2020 at the Kunstmuseum Bochum. For the Berlin Gallery 2021 Weekend, it will be on view - organized by his Berlin gallery Semjon Contemporary - at the Schinkelkirche St. Elisabeth. As a place of considerable historical significance, carrying the memory of traumatic but also hopeful events, the Schinkel building is the appropriate venue for the presentation of the impressive "Cast Whale Project."
